Biography:
While I was completing my Ph. D. and raising a young family, I was a member of the adjunct faculty at Bergen Community College and Ramapo College and also worked as a freelance editor. After two years as Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Rutherford Public Schools (1994-96), I returned to Bergen and took a full-time position on the English faculty in 1998. I teach courses in composition, literature and creative writing and have published and given presentations in these areas. I was the director of the CIT Research Paper Project, an online resource created by members of the English and library faculty (www.bergen.edu/rpp)
I am a Co-Director of Bergen’s Honors Program and a member of the Beacon Steering Committee, which sponsors an annual conference for student scholars at two-year colleges. I was awarded a Princeton Mid-career Fellowship in 2006-2007, resulting in the research and writing of “Creating a Successful Honors Program.” I am also treasurer of the New Jersey Writing Alliance and a member of its steering committee.
What made you decide to become a faculty/staff member:
As a graduate student, I interviewed for a teaching position at Bergen Community College. I was excited to be part of a college that celebrated and acknowledged students of diverse backgrounds as compared to a traditional institution and its homogeneous student body. My initial impressions of Bergen have been confirmed through numerous positive experiences with the college community.
How do you personally define success in the learning outcomes of your students? :
I define success in my students when I see them discuss their ideas with their classmates, get excited about a poem or story, or find just the right words to express their thoughts.
What have you learned from your students?:
Bergen Community College students continually impress me with their intelligence, drive and diversity. They have given me new ideas, attitudes, and perspectives.
