Biography:
I have been working for the past 30 years as an Administrative/Executive Assistant for many senior level executives. Even though I didn't have a college education, I was able to get ahead and did well for myself. However when I lost my job last year, most of the positions available at my salary and experience level required a college degree. Now, not only am I working towards that goal, I have an opportunity at a new career as well. I am about half way through my program and with my new degree and my years of experience, I hope to find a rewarding and secure position as a paralegal.
Why did you choose Bergen Community College?:
After the loss of my job last year, I was offered a tuition waiver through the unemployment office, and Bergen was convenient. I heard that Bergen was a great community college but I was in for a major surprise. I had no idea of the high quality education I would receive and I am very grateful.
What advice would you give a prospective student?:
I would tell younger students to come to every class and not to miss out on an opportunity to learn everything they can. Be prepared for every class to get the most out of your education. There are many excellent professors at Bergen and they have a lot of knowledge to share. For the older students, it is hard to go back to school after so many years, but don't give up. It's definitely worth it!
What has been your favorite academic experience so far?:
Recently, I had to do a speech in an honors class. The speech was to be given on a culture other than our own. The last week of September, 2006 was Native American Heritage Week and I had the opportunity to interview several Native American visitors for my speech. I learned a lot about their culture and got an A on my speech. I treasure the experience because I always wanted to learn more about these wonderful people. I am continuing to read about their culture even though my assignment has already been completed!
